After winning the Italian Super Cup on his debut as Inter coach and ahead of Friday night's UEFA Super Cup match against Atletico Madrid, Rafael Benitez told Sky Sport Italia about the progress his team has made over the past few months.
"Inter is a winning team with players who have the right mentality; players with character who fight to win," said Benitez, who said he has spoken to his men about the the presence of TV cameras in the dressing room during Serie A games this season.
"It's certainly a strange thing because we know that the dressing room is like a sacristy for a priest; a place where you shouldn't enter, but I think we have to find the right compromise," he said.
Looking back to Saturday's Italian Super Cup victory over Roma, the Spanish coach added: "This is a team that wants to win every game and play good football. We won the first trophy of the season against Roma, but the important thing is that we saw a team that wants to play the ball more, keep more possession and press more.
"We played 4-2-3-1 because the players were already used to this system so it was easier like this, but we will change if we want to. All we need is time to try out new things in training and be prepared. I'd like Inter to be at one hundred percent against Atletico Madrid, but we need time. It's not easy to say how long, because the players didn't arrive back at the same time and some came back late. We need time to work."
Asked for his opinion of Wesley Sneijder, Benitez said: "He's a great player, a quality player, but I prefer to talk about the team. We have many quality players in this team and they will all be important. Cambiasso my alter ego on the pitch? He likes talking about football and being a coach on the pitch, and it's easy for me to talk with him. The same goes for Zanetti. We speak in Spanish and it's more immediate this way."
