Sulley Muntari's Ghana are out of the World Cup after losing on penalties to Uruguay following a 1-1 extra-time draw in Friday's quarter-final at Soccer City. The South Americans will now face Wesley Sneijder's Holland in the semi-finals in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Over 84,000 fans watched as Inter midfielder Muntari curled a 35-yard shot beyond Muslera to put the Black Cats in front in added time at the end of the first half. Diego Forlan equalised ten minutes after the break with a well-taken free kick from the edge of the box on the right.
Extra time ended in dramatic fashion with Luis Suarez receiving a red card in the 120th minute for punching Dominic Adiyiah's header off the line and Ghana being awarded a penalty - which Asamoah Gyan smashed against the crossbar.
The South Americans won the resulting shoot-out 4-2, with Sebastian Abreu scoring the winning penalty after misses by his team-mate Maximiliano Pereira and Muslera's saves from Jonathan Mensah and Dominic Adiyiah.
Muntari was replaced by Adiyiah in the 88th minute of the quarter-final clash.
