In the first 2010 World Cup semi-final against Uruguay in Cape Town on Tuesday evening, Inter's Wesley Sneijder will take another step towards the most important title for national teams, which will be awarded after the final in Johannesburg on Sunday 11 July. And if he wins the trophy with Holland, Wesley will become the 22nd Inter player to lift the World Cup.
Sneijder's four goals in the tournament so far come after an extraordinary season with Inter: 3 trophies (Champions League, Scudetto and Coppa Italia), 41 appearances and 8 goals, from the Milan derby on 29 August 2009 (he had arrived in Milan just 24 hours earlier) to his vital comeback goal in Kiev, his entertaining style of play and assists for his team-mates.
According to France Football, the magazine that distributes the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, Sneijder is one of the clear favourites to win it because 'this year he has transformed everything he has touched into gold'. Today, in Johannesburg, it was announced that the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player Awards will be combined into one. National team coaches and captains, and representatives of the international press will cast their votes ahead of the prize-giving ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland on 10 January 2011.
Tomorrow, against Uruguay in Cape Town, Wesley Sneijder can take another step towards this prestigious award.
